Some of the names and attributes of God

Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he knows and understands My name. (has a personal knowledge of My mercy, love and kindness-trusts and relies on Me, knowing I will never forsake him, no never.)  Ps 91:14

 

Let them praise and exalt the name of the Lord, for His name alone is exalted and supreme!  His glory and majesty are above the earth and heaven!  Ps 148:13

 

O Lord, our Lord, how excellent (majestic and glorious) is Your name in all the earth.  Ps 8:9

 

The name of the Lord is a Strong Tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe, high above evil and strong.  Prov. 18:10

 

And they who know Your name (who have experience and acquaintance with Your mercy) will lean on and confidently put their trust in You, for You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek (inquire of and for) You.  Ps 9:10

 

Then those who feared the Lord talked often one to another; and the Lord listened and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him of those who reverenced and worshipfully feared the Lord and who thought on His name.  And they shall be mine, says the Lord of hosts, in that day when I publicly recognize and openly declare them to be My jewels (My special possession, My peculiar treasure). And I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him.  Malachi 3:16-17

 

Let them confess and praise Your great name, awesome and reverence inspiring!  It is holy , and holy is He!  Ps. 99:3

 

 

A name imparts meaning, value, identity, and significance.

 

God

                             In the beginning God created the heaven and earth.  Gen.1:1

God-the Supreme Being, the Master of the universe

Abba

                             For the Spirit which you have now received is not a spirit of slavery to put you once more in bondage to fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption (the Spirit producing sonship) in the bliss of which we cry, Abba! Father!      Romans 8:15

Advocate

                             My little children, I write you these things so that you may not violate God’s law and sin.  But if anyone should sin, we have an Advocate (One who will intercede for us) with the Father-it is Jesus Christ the all righteous, upright, and just. Who conforms to the Father’s will in every purpose, thought and action. I John 2:1

                                                Advocate-one who pleads the cause of another or himself; to defend, to urge, to support, to endorse

Almighty

                             When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, I am the Almighty God; walk and live habitually before Me and be perfect (blameless, whole hearted, complete). Gen. 17:1

                                                I am the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. Says the Lord God, He Who was and Who is and Who is to come, the Almighty (the Ruler of all).  Rev 1:8

                             I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last (the Before all and the End of all).  Rev. 22:13

Amen, the Origin, Author of God ‘screation

                             And to the angel (messenger) of the assembly (church) in Laodicea write:  These are the words of the Amen, the trusty and faithful and true Witness, the Origin and Beginning and Author of God’s creation.  Rev. 3:14

Ancient of Days

I kept looking until thrones were placed (for the assessors with the Judge), and the Ancient of Days (God, the eternal Father) took His seat, Whose garment was white as snow and the hair of His head like pure wool, His throne was like the fiery flame;  its wheels were burning fire.  Daniel 7:9

Ancient-belongs to a remote period of time, very old

Anointed One

The kings of the earth take their places; the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and His Anointed One (the Messiah, the Christ).  Ps. 2:2

Anointed-to choose by or as if by divine election

 

 

Apostle

Wherefore holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus.  Heb. 3:1

Apostle- a person zealously advocating a cause

Arm of the Lord

Who has believed (trusted in, relied upon, and clung to) our message (of which was revealed to us)? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been disclosed? Isa. 53:1

Arm-the range of authority; power

Author of Life (Source of Life)

But you killed the very Source (the Author) of life, Whom God raised from the dead.  To this we are witnesses.  Acts 3:15

Author-one who creates or originates

Life-the condition of a functioning creature; the time between life and death

Beginning, End

And He (further) said to me, It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without price from the fountain of the water of Life. Rev. 21:6

Blessed and Sovereign Ruler

Which (appearing) will be shown forth in His own proper time by the blessed, only Sovereign (Ruler), the King of kings and the Lord of lord’s.  I Tim. 6:15

Branch

In those days and at that time will I cause a righteous Branch (the Messiah) to grow up to David; and He shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.  Jeremiah 33:15

For the Bread of God is He Who comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world.  John 6:48

Bright and Morning Star

I, Jesus, have sent My messenger (angel) to you to witness and give to you assurance of these things for the churches (assemblies).  I am the Root (the Source) and the Offspring of David, the radiant and brilliant Morning Star.  Rev. 22:16

Chief Shepherd

And then when the Chief Shepherd is revealed, you will win the conqueror’s crown of glory.  I Pet. 5:4

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, and looking for the Consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him.  Luke 2:25

Consuming Fire

                             For our God is indeed a consuming fire.  Heb. 12:29

For the Lord your God is a consuming fire; a jealous God.  Deut. 4:24

Door

So Jesus said again, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, that I, Myself, am the Door for the sheep…  I am the Door; anyone who enters in through Me will be saved. He will come in and he will go out, and will find pasture. John 10:7, 9

Door-any means of access, entrance, or exit

Eternal God

The eternal God is your refuge and dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms; He drove the enemy before you and thrust them out, saying, Destroy!  Deut. 33:27

Faithful Witness, Prince (Ruler) over kings of the earth

And from Jesus Christ the faithful and trustworthy Witness, the First born of the dead (first to be brought back to life) and the Prince (Ruler) of the kings of the earth. To Him Who ever loves us and has once (for all) loosed and freed us from our sins by His own blood.  Rev. 1:5

Firstborn

For those whom He foreknew (of whom He was aware and loved beforehand), He also destined from the beginning (foreordaining them) to be molded into the image of His Son (and share inwardly His likeness), that He might become the Firstborn among many brethren.  Rom.8:29

Firstfruits

But the fact is that Christ (the Messiah) has been raised from the dead, and He became the Firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep (in death)…But each in his own rank and turn: Christ (the Messiah) is the Firstfruits, then those who are Christ’s (own will be resurrected) at his coming.  I Cor. 15:20, 23

Friend

The Son of man came eating and drinking (with others), and they say, Behold, a glutton and a wine drinker, a friend of tax collectors and (especially) wicked sinners! Yet wisdom is justified and vindicated by what she does and by her children.  Matt. 11:19

Gentle Whisper

And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire (a sound of gentle stillness and) a still, small voice.  I Kings 19:12

Gift of God

Jesus answered her, If you had only known and only recognized God’s gift and Who this is that is saying to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him (instead) and He would have given you living water.  John 4:10

Glory of the Lord

And the glory (majesty and splendor) the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it.  Isa. 40:5

God Over all

                             To them belong the patriarchs, as far as his natural descent was concerned, from them is the Christ, Who is exalted and supreme over all, God, blessed forever! Amen Rom. 9:5

Good Shepherd

                             I am the Good Shepherd; the Good Shepherd risks and lays down His (own) life for the sheep.  John 10:11

Great Shepherd, God of Peace

Guide

I Am

And God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM and  WHAT I AM, and I WILL BE WHAT I WILL BE;  and He said, you shall say this to the Israelites; I AM has sent me to you.  John 8:58

For the god of this world ha blinded the unbelievers minds (that they should not discern the truth), preventing them from seeing the illuminating light of the Gospel of the glory of Christ, Who is the Image and likeness of God.  II Cor. 4:4

As an eagle that stirs up her nest that flutters over her young He spread abroad His wings and He took them, He bore them on His pinions. Deut. 32:11

Lily of the Valley, Rose of Sharon

I am only a little rose or autumn crocus of the Plain of Sharon, or a (humble) lily of the valley (that grows in deep and difficult places).  Song of Songs 2:1

Roses were greatly prized in the East, for the rose-water. The Rose of Sharon is sacredly associated with the heavenly Bridegroom.

Lion of the tribe of Judah, Root (Source) Of David

Then one of the elders said to me, Stop weeping! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root (Source) of David, has won (has overcome and conquered)! He can open the scroll and break its seven seals! Rev. 5:5

Living Stone

Come to Him (then, to that) Living Stone which man tried and threw away, but which is chosen and precious in God’s sight.

Lord

You call Me the Teacher (Master) and the Lord, and you are right in doing so, for that is what I am.  John 13:13

Lord Jesus Christ

But thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory (making us conquerors) through our Lord Jesus Christ.  I Cor. 15:57

Lord of all

You know the contents of the message which He sent to Israel, announcing the good news of peace by Jesus Christ, Who is Lord of all.  Acts 10:36

Lord of glory

None of the rulers of this age or world perceived and recognized or understood this, for if they had they would never have crucified the Lord of glory.  I Cor. 2:8

Love

He who does not love has not become acquainted with God, for God is love.  I John 4:8

Master

And Simon (Peter) answered, Master, we toiled all night and caught nothing.  But on the ground of Your Word, I will lower the nests again.  Luke 5:5

Master-one who has chief authority or control

Mediator

For there (is only) one God, and (only) one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.  I Tim. 2:5

Mediator-settles a dispute as an impartial third party

Merciful God

Go and proclaim these words toward the North (where the ten tribes have been taken captives) and say, Return, faithless Israel, says the Lord, and I will not cause My countenance to fall and look in anger upon you, for I am merciful, says the Lord; I will not keep My anger forever.  Jeremiah 3:12

Mercy-compassion; an act of forgiveness or compassion; the act of sparing someone punishment shown to an offender or enemy

Messenger

Behold, I sent My messenger, and he shall prepare the way before Me, and the Lord (the Messiah), Whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple, the Messenger or Angel of the covenant, Whom you desire, behold, He shall come, says the Lord of hosts.

Messiah

The woman said to Him, I know that Messiah is coming, He Who is called the Christ (the Anointed One); and when He arrives, He will tell us everything we need to know and make clear to us.

Mighty God, Prince of Peace, Wonderful Counselor, Everlasting Father, Child, Son

For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulders and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father (of eternity), Prince of Peace.  Isa. 9:6

Mighty-powerful, strong, important, great

Counselor-someone who helps you make the best choice

Mighty One

The Mighty One, God, the Lord, speaks and calls the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth. Ps. 50:1, 2

Mighty-powerful, strong, important, great

Nazarene

He went and dwelt in a town called Nazareth, so that what was spoken through the prophets would be fulfilled:  He shall be called a Nazarene (Branch, Seperated One).  Matt. 2:23

Offspring of David, Root of David

Root-the foundation of anything; the source, origin, or cause

Only Begotten Son

No man has ever seen God at any time; the only unique Son, or the only begotten Son, Who is in the bosom (in the intimate presence) of the Father, He has declared Him (He has revealed Him and brought Him out where He can be seen; He has interupreted Him and He has made Him known).  John 1:18

Our Passover Lamb

Purge (clean out) the old leaven that you may be fresh (new) dough, still uncontaminated (as you are), for Christ, Our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed.  I Cor. 5:7

Power of God, Wisdom of God

But to those who are called, whether Jew or Greek, Christ is the Power of God and the Wisdom of God.  I Cor. 1:24

Wisdom-learning and the capacity to use it

Prophet

Thus Moses said to the forefathers, The Lord God will raise up for you a Prophet from among you brethren as (He raised up) me; Him you shall listen to and understand by hearing and heed in all things whatever He tells you.  Acts 3:22

Prophet-a spokesman, esp. one inspired by God

Rabboni (Teacher)

Jesus said to her, Mary! Turning around she said to Him in Hebrew, Rabboni-which means Teacher or Master.  John 20:16

Rock

And they all drank the same spiritual (supernaturally given) drink. For they drank from a spiritual Rock which followed them, and the Rock was Christ. I Cor. 10:4

Seed

Son of David

As Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed Him, shouting loudly, have pity and mercy on us, Son of David.  Matt.9:27

He will be great (eminent) and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to Him the throne of His forefather David.  Luke 1:32

Source of eternal salvation

And, (His completed experience) making Him perfectly equipped, He became the Author and Source of eternal salvation to all those who give heed and obey and obey Him. Heb. 5:9

Spirit of God

Faithful and True

                                                After that I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse appeared!  The One Who was riding it is called Faithful (Trustworthy, Loyal, Incorruptible, Steady) and True, and He passes judgment, and wages war in righteousness (holiness, justice, and uprightness). Rev. 19:11

-Genesis 16:13-So she called the name of the Lord Who spoke to her, You are a God of seeing, for she said, have I (not) even here (in the wilderness) looked upon Him Who sees me? Or have I here also seen (the future purposes or designs of) Him Who sees me?

 

 

El-Shaddai

          -meaning “God Almighty”

-Psalm 91:1-He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty (Whose power no foe can withstand).

El-Olam

          -meaning- “The Everlasting God”

-Isaiah 40:28-31-Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, does not faint or grow weary; there is no searching of His understanding. He gives power to the faint and weary, and to him who has no might He increases strength (causing it to multiply and making it to abound…But those who wait for the Lord (who expect, look for, and hope in Him) shall change and renew their strength and power; they shall lift their wings and mount up (close to God) as eagles.
